CUPE National's Health and Safety Award

HEU members are well aware that health care workers have one of the highest injury rates of all occupations.

According to WorkSafeBC’s October 2016 stats, there were 145,803 workers injured on the job. And health care continues to have the highest injury rate among all labour sectors – with an alarmingly high number of injuries due to workplace violence. Our care aides, particularly in long-term care, account for the highest number of on-the-job injuries.

That’s why it’s important for HEU to recognize workers who contribute to workplace safety.

CUPE National’s Health and Safety committee is seeking nominations for its annual National Health and Safety Award. The winner will receive a commemorative plaque at the CUPE National Convention, and a donation will be made to a social justice organization on their behalf.

The criteria includes: health and safety leaders whose actions have helped resolve workplace problems, and/or those who have achieved important victories, established precedents, improved working conditions, and raised awareness about occupational illness or disease.

The closing date for nominations is July 4.
