In the wake of this weekend’s horrific mass shooting at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, the Hospital Employees’ Union is expressing solidarity with the LGBTTI community here and around the world.

HEU president Victor Elkins says the tragedy is a critical reminder that homophobia and transphobia persist, and need to be confronted wherever and whenever they occur.

“As an openly gay trade union leader, I am deeply saddened by this senseless act of violence and am sending our heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of all those who were killed and injured,” says Elkins.

“HEU is a union with deeply held social justice principles. We will continue to fight for LGBTTI people, both inside our union and in our communities, and will continue to stand strong against hate and oppression in all forms.”

HEU urges members across the province to celebrate pride gatherings in the coming months, and to continue to make our workplaces safe for members of the LGBTTI community.
