Community Social Services Bargaining Update

Update from Community Social Services bargaining

The Community Social Services bargaining committee is back at the table with the Community Social Services Employers’ Association (CSSEA) this week for scheduled negotiations until April 8th.

Collective agreements are negotiated contracts that outline the rights of union members and the terms and conditions of their employment. April 1st marked the expiry of the collective agreements for General Services, Indigenous Services, and Community Living Services.

While bargaining for a new collective agreement is still in process, the terms and conditions of the recently expired agreement is still in effect. This means it is currently business as usual for all HEU CSS members, including local issues bargaining, unless otherwise stated from the union.

The CSS bargaining committee has been engaged in interest-based bargaining, which is a new and unique process to the sector. It is a time-intensive process that involves providing detailed explanations of the issues that workers are facing in the sector before the exchange of proposals. Real-life examples are being shown in order to highlight the need for change and to strengthen the case at the bargaining table. The committee is working toward a new agreement that is fair and just.

Due to commitments by both parties, there will be a scheduled break in talks at the end of this week, and then bargaining will resume again by mid-May.
