Improving work-life balance

Your bargaining committee secured new measures in the 2022-2025 Facilities collective agreement as part of improving work-life balance.

From giving members input into their schedules and reducing the number of six-day rotations, to enhanced portability of benefits and seniority for members who accept employment at another Facilities work site, these improvements respond to your demands for changes that contribute to good mental and physical health.

Plus, they also help fulfill staffing and operational requirements, along with promoting recruitment and retention.

Here’s the list of enhanced provisions in the renewed contract that support a more sustainable work experience for members:

  • Improved Scheduling and Shift Rotations - With the support of HEU and rotation personnel, you can now revise your unit or department’s rotations when they are mutually agreed to and approved by impacted regular employees through a 75 per cent vote in favour.

  • Working Extended Hours - If you have an extended work week or a compressed work week, you will continue to receive the appropriate compensation for benefits based on hours worked in place of days.

  • Recognizing Working from Home - In addition to setting out the terms for introducing or continuing working-from-home arrangements that protect members’ rights to this employment option, your employer must now provide at least 30 days notice for the cancellation of the arrangement, as well as a reason for the change at your request.

  • Enhanced Portability - If you change employers within the Facilities subsector, in addition to porting unused credits for sick leave and vacation entitlement, you will now receive credit for special leave, plus the timeframe to port your seniority and benefits has been increased and standardized to one year.

  • Improving the Work Experience of New Employees - The work of the recruitment and retention working group continues in the renewed agreement with a special focus on assessing the feasibility of creating trainer/mentor positions to aid new employees.

This bulletin is part of a series of updates about the renewed Facilities collective agreement. Watch this space for future updates. If you have questions about any of these provisions, please contact your shop steward.
