In partnership with HEU, MOSAIC BC, an immigrant service organization, is offering a free online English as an Additional Language course for HEU members.
Note: A pilot version of this course was previously offered only to HEU members working in the private sector. However, the course eligibility has been expanded and is now available to HEU member working in any health care facility.
The HEU language training course is ideal for any HEU member who does not speak English as their first language and who wants to:
- Improve their English skills at their workplace;
- Get English proficiency to qualify for health care training programs; and
- Gain confidence in listening, speaking, reading and writing in English
About the Course
- The course runs for six months.
- You will study topics to help you communicate and feel more confident in your workplace.
- There are eight modules covering workplace communication, workplace safety, patient interactions, and diversity and inclusion.
- The classes are entirely online. You will complete independent study activities on your own schedule on a Moodle site.
- There will be weekly group workshops and one-to-one meetings with your teacher on Zoom.
- There will be assessments throughout the course to help you see your progress.
- At the end of the course there will be the opportunity to take a Canadian Language Benchmark Placement Test (CLBPT) or International English Language Test (IELTS). These tests are needed to apply for many training programs.
Course Participation
Participants will be expected to:
- Complete 5.5 hours per week of online independent study;
- Attend one-hour weekly group workshops throughout the six months. Workshops will be offered at various morning, afternoon and evening times during the week (Tuesday at 9:00-10:00 am, 3:30-4:30 pm, 6:00-7:00 pm, or 8:00-9:00 pm; or Wednesday at 10:00-11:00 am, 8:00-9:00 pm). Participants can attend any workshop time that works for their schedules. It does not need to be the same time every week;
- Attend one-to-one online tutorials and coaching sessions with the instructor, as needed; and
- Complete assessments, to track language progression.
Please note that the course will be entirely online, with a portion on zoom. Participants should be comfortable navigating websites.
To participate in this course, access to a laptop is required.
Eligibility
The class is for HEU members for whom English is your additional language AND who have intermediate level English skills. You must have CLB 5 or 6 to enroll. HEU members will need to take a free language test to be admitted to the class.
If you do not know your English level, or do not have a test from the last two years, you will need to take a free language test to be admitted to the class. Once it is graded by MOSAIC, you will know if you are eligible or not for the course. The test takes approximately two hours.

The course dates are January 6 to June 20, 2025.
