HEU has partnered with MOSAIC, an immigrant service organization, to offer free online English as an additional language training for HEU members who speak English as an additional language.
While this training was previously offered only to members in the private sector, it is now available to members working at ANY facility.
The HEU English language training is ideal for any HEU member who speak English as an additional language, and wants to:
- Improve their English skills at their workplace;
- Get English proficiency to qualify for health care training programs; or
- Gain confidence in listening, speaking, reading and writing in English.
About the Courses
- Two levels of courses will be offered: Intermediate and Advanced
- Each course runs for six months July 7 to December 19, 2025 and will be delivered by MOSAIC
- You will study topics to help you communicate and feel more confident in your workplace.
- Each course has eight modules covering workplace communication, workplace safety, patient interactions, and diversity and inclusion.
- Classes are entirely delivered online. You will complete independent study activities on your own schedule on a Moodle site.
- There will be weekly group workshops and one-to-one meetings with your teacher on Zoom.
- There will be assessments throughout the course to help you see your progress.
- At the end of the course there will be the opportunity to take a Canadian Language Benchmark Placement Test (CLBPT) or International English Language Test (IELTS). These tests are needed to apply for many training programs.
Course Participation
Participants will be expected to:
Complete 5.5 hours per week of online independent study
- Attend one-hour weekly group workshops. Workshops will be offered in the mornings, afternoons and evenings during the week. Participants can attend any online time that works for their schedule, and it does not need to be the same time every week. Please see the Workshop Times schedule below.
- Attend one-to-one online tutorials and coaching sessions with the instructor, as needed;
- Complete assessments to track language progression.
Please note that the course will be entirely online, with a portion on zoom. Participants should be comfortable navigating websites.
The course works best with a laptop. Access to a laptop or tablet is required.
Eligibility
You must have Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) 5 or 6 to enroll in the Intermediate classes; or CLB 7 or 8 to enroll in the Advanced classes.
HEU members will need to take a free language test to be admitted to the class. The test can be taken at the time of registration, on the registration site. Once it is graded by MOSAIC, you will receive notification by email about your eligibility for the course. The test takes approximately two hours.
