Families, caregivers protest proposed closure of West Van seniors’ care facility

Save Capilano Care Centre Rally — today at 11:30 a.m., Park Royal Mall

Community outrage over the Vancouver Coastal Health Authority’s proposed closure of the 217-bed Capilano Care Centre is the reason that residents’ families, their caregivers and supporters will rally today at 11:30 a.m. at the Park Royal Mall South in West Vancouver.

Despite a six-month old report from the now-defunct health region indicating the need for an increase in the number of beds and community services for North Shore seniors, the same people working for the new health authority now appear willing to cut 367 long-term care beds and $1.6 million in community services in West and North Vancouver.

Capilano Care Centre, which is home to many seniors requiring high levels of care, is a fully funded care facility. Its possible closure is part of the B.C. Liberal government’s plan to eliminate 8,000 long-term care beds province-wide.
