HEU has a strong and long history as a social justice union. Together we work to end inequity and discrimination in all its forms and to build leadership capacity among HEU members who identify with a designated equity group.
In recognition of the diversity of our union, HEU established seven equity standing committees:
- Ethnic Diversity (people of colour)
- Indigenous Peoples
- Older Persons (55 years old +) - established at HEU’s 2024 convention
- People with Disabilities
- Pink Triangle (2SLGBTQIA+)
- 2-Spirit, Women and Non-binary
- Young Workers (up to age 35)
Each committee is made up of seven members who self-identify with the equity-seeking group the committee represents, along with the Provincial Executive Diversity Vice-President. Working with HEU’s equity officer, these committees provide outreach and advocacy to HEU members and work in solidarity with other social justice groups and the union movement.
