In 2025, the multi-union Community Social Services Bargaining Association (CSSBA) will begin contract negotiations with the Community Social Services Employers’ Association (CSSEA).

More than 19,000 health care workers – including 1,500 HEU members – are covered by the CSSBA collective agreement which expires on March 31, 2025.

To prepare for bargaining, the CSSBA is gathering important information from frontline workers about their experiences with shiftwork in the sector, and HEU encourages its CSS members to participate.

The confidential survey takes about five to 10 minutes to complete, and includes questions covering:

•    the impacts of shiftwork on members’ health, well-being and family life;
•    the impacts on workplace staffing, recruitment and retention; and
•    whether additional pay for shiftwork could play a role in addressing some of these challenges.

For the purpose of this survey, “shiftwork” is defined as evening, overnight and weekend work outside the standard Monday to Friday daytime workweek.

The survey will close at midnight on January 12, 2025.
