If you are new on the JOHS Committee, start here to access the OHS education you need to build your skills.
All new JOHSC members must be provided with a mandatory minimum eight hours of training covering the topics listed below. Both regular and alternate worker representatives are eligible for this training.
Smaller workplaces (with more than 9 but fewer than 20 workers) are not required to have a JOHS Committee. But they are required to have a worker health and safety representative.
If you are a new worker health and safety representative, you must receive at least four hours of mandatory training covering topics from 1 through 4 listed below.
- This training is paid for by your employer.
- You must receive this training no later than six months after you start in your role.
- This mandatory minimum training is in addition to the employer-paid annual education that all JOHSC members are entitled to. Find out about annual JOHSC education
The new member training must include:
- the duties and functions of a JOHS Committee under section 36 of the Workers Compensation Act
- how to participate in investigations
- how to participate in inspections
- the right to refuse unsafe work
- the rules of procedure of the JOHS Committee
- how to participate in the evaluation of JOHS Committees
- Where can I find the language explaining the mandatory minimum training for new JOHSC members that is required by law?
-
Part 3.27 of the Occupational Health and Safety Regulation (OHSR) outlines the minimum training requirements for new JOHSC members. Read the regulations.
- What if I do not get the eight hours of the required minimum training?
-
- Ask how to access the minimum training at the next JOHSC meeting
- Bring your request directly to your supervisor

- Can I take the mandatory minimum training for new JOHSC members again if I have been off the JOHSC for a period of time?
-
Yes. If you have been off of the JOHSC for at least two years, you can take the mandatory minimum training again. This also applies to the worker health and safety representative.
- Can I participate in the JOHSC meetings before I’ve attended any JOHSC courses?
-
Yes! Your work experience is valuable, and speaks volumes. Your employer cannot stop you from participating, once you’ve been appointed.
