This workshop is designed to offer information, skills and tools for members who are active shop stewards or interested in becoming active shop stewards at the worksite.
Introduction to Shop Stewarding is intended for members new to stewarding. Participants will:
- learn about the role and responsibilities of a shop steward, including HEU’s structure and the importance of union solidarity.
- review guidelines for interpreting collective agreement provisions and defending members’ rights.
- learn and practice the basics of investigating and writing grievances
- build steward skills for effective meetings with management and presenting grievances with confidence.
- practice problem solving by applying an organizing approach for collective action in the resolution of issues.
- explore the steward’s role in recognizing and addressing oppression and discrimination, and in promoting equity in the workplace and union.
